I use it on my laptop.  It is great.  I can use the host machine's
network, wireless, with hardly no tweaking.  I often do a lot of my
testing this way, Oracle on Linux and the Windows specific clients on
windows.  I would try some of the open source VMs 1st b/f paying for VM
ware.
