Did you check the ATI support and Framebuffer support in the kernel config?

I used a config file in the previous kernel source directory called
kernel-2.4.21-i686-smp.config (because I wanted dual processor
support). I also installed pptp-conntrack-nat patch from netfilter's
patch-o-matic.

That's a good thing. Did you use any system provided kernel
configuration files when you built the new kernel or did you start
entirely from scratch?

Kernel configuration isn't my foremost forte but I do seem to remember
something different about setting it up with an onboard ATI like that
(from a Dell PowerEdge 2300 machine). Can you send your kernel config
file? Did you save it?

Yes, works great when booting to the previous kernel
(2.4.21-15.0.4.EL).

ATI Mach64. Anyhow, X works fine at this point.

I downloaded and compiled the 2.4.27 kernel.

When I boot up, I get this error message I expect to see the gui

Did I miss something in menuconfig when I compiled the 2.4.27 kernel?

Thanks,
