i 2nd the suggestion of ed. before you do anything, please get/already have
a router/firewall box, it'll make your life soooo much easier over time!!!!

Easiest thing to do is to get a Linksys firewall box and use that to get
your dynamic address from the network.  Then configure your Linux system
with a static address (192.168.x.y).

The Linksys adds value by blocking all incoming connections by default
and you can add another system later.
