I have an USB Yamaha external CD-RW (model CRW2200E), located at /mnt/cdrom2. When I boot RHEL with this device turned on, it may become unresponsive. When it happens, the following command will hang : $ eject /mnt/cdrom2 To circumvent that problem, I turn it on only when init 5 has been reached. Sometimes, when I shutdown my PC, I have a message similar to the one below just before the shutdown. The message is repeated 3 times before the shutdown. "unable to umount /home: peripheral is busy [FAILED]" /home is an ext3 partition. However, this may not be correlated. Here are the relevant parts of my log file. $ more /var/log/message Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: usb.c: registered new driver usbdevfs Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: usb.c: registered new driver hub Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: usb-uhci.c: $Revision: 1.275 $ time 12:59:57 Jul 2 2004 Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: usb-uhci.c: High bandwidth mode enabled Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:10.0 Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:0c.0 Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:11.1 Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xd400, IRQ 10 Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1 Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: hub.c: USB hub found Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: hub.c: 2 ports detected Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:10.1 Jul 14 19:24:29 kernel: usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xd800, IRQ 10 Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 2 Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: hub.c: USB hub found Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: hub.c: 2 ports detected Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:10.2 Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 00:13.0 Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xdc00, IRQ 11 Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 3 Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: hub.c: USB hub found Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: hub.c: 2 ports detected Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: usb-uhci.c: v1.275:USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:10.3 Jul 14 19:24:30 kernel: ehci-hcd 00:10.3: VIA Technologies, Inc.
