RE: reinstall Redhat necessary when GRUB is not accessible?

Install the XP and let the grub go away.

Then boot with Red Hat CD. On the opening screen,
where it is asking for options type "Linux rescue". It
will then ask a few preliminary questions and try to
install the linux partition. It will mount it on the
mnt/sysimage. You can also do the chroot. 

Then try /sbin/grub-install {drive}. The drive can be
/dev/hda. Then exit the shell and reboot.
 
Hopefully, it should install grub.
