RPM question

I'm trying to build an RPM for gd-2.0.27. I'm using the .spec file from
1.8 as that is the latest version from RedHat. I'm able to build the
RPM, however when it installs, it complains about failed dependency for
libgd.so.1.8(glibc uses it).

I'm adding a link for libgd.so.1.8 to point to the new libgd.so however
its not correcting the problem. I thought that if I upgrade the
package, and it replaces files it would be okay. Am I missing something
here?
