If nothing else goes, start your computer from diskette/cd.
Then mount the system partition of hard disk (/dev/hda1) and delete the
root password in file /where_your_harddrive_partition_is_mounted/etc/shadow
Now you can reboot your normal system with and set a new root-password

You can create a script in /etc/profile.d which expands your path
don't forget to make the script executable ;-)
