I have found a link which points me to xcdroast web page.

I shall be able to load xcdroast instead.

As for dvdrecord, I did log in as root, so something a bit fishy about it.

Someone in the taroon-list has buiilt the RPM for xcdroast for RHEL 3.
Please 
search it in the archive for the place to download it. If you can't find it 
or it's already gone, I can probably put mine in my webserver for temporary 
for you to download.  Of course, this is in no way official rpm package from

Redhat and will *not* be supported if something broke. I have used it just 
fine though.

Did you try it as root ? probably you don't have enough permission to open 
/dev/sg*. is your drive running in scsi emulation mode (with ide-scsi
module)
