Hi:
Do you have a subsection for your display in
/etc/X11/XF86Config
If not add after DefaultColorDepth 32 
Subsection "Display"
 Depth 24
 Modes "1024 x 768"
 ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection

Adjust screen res. for your monitor.
 Do you get any error messages when you reboot e.g
Could not open default font 'fixed'
Also take a look in in XF86 logfiles.
