Look at amanda.
I think it is included with 7.3, if not, it is with later versions of redhat.

Hello,

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2600 server with a DLT tape. It runs RedHat 7.3.

There are other servers on the network (100tx ethernet) with drives that are
mounted as smbfs shares.

I am unable to write directly to the tape from a smbfs share using tar,
presumably because the network couldn't keep up. The error was "tar: Error
exit delayed from previous errors" , which is not a lot of help.

I had hoped to add an IDE disk as a tape buffer, but there is no standard
IDE support on the motherboard. I cannot spare 50GB of SCSI disk for
buffering.

Is there any more sophisticated tape writing software which can handle
buffering correctly?
