The other thing you need to do is to edit ~/.vnc/xstartup to look something like: #!/bin/sh # Red Hat Linux VNC session startup script unset SESSION_MANAGER exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc Then restart your vnc server (probably with 'service vncserver restart') That should fix the problem.
