I'm curious about what the commandline options are that you're using
when you fire up fetchmail...?

Have you tried it verbosely with:

fetchmail --verbose --nodetach --smtpaddress=whatever.com.au
--smtpuser=you@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

..?
