Is there only one kernel-source RPM for all kernels, e.g. UP and SMP,

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Hello List,

I thought there was only one kernel-source RPM for all kernels,
and I certainly have not been able to find more than one kernel-source
RPM on the distro CDs and on the Internet.

Can you please tell me if my assumption about there being only
one kernel-source RPM for all kernels, e.g. UP and SMP, is correct?

The reason that I ask is that I have been trying to compile the Intel e1000
module (version 5.2.30.1) for both the UP and SMP kernels. I have been receiving
some errors that I emailed Intel about and they said there was more than one kernel
source. Perhaps someone could suggest how I can avoid the errors (as outlined in
my email to intel below). Thank you.

->   ->   Hello Intel,
->   ->
->   ->   I have downloaded the e1000 base driver source and while creating the
->   ->   RPM, I received the following error (among others):
->   ->
->   ->   Makefile:140: *** Warning: kernel source version (2.4.18-3)
->   ->   Makefile:141: *** does not match running kernel  (2.4.18-3smp)
->   ->   Makefile:142: *** Continuing with build,
->   ->   Makefile:143: *** resulting driver may not be what you want
->   ->
->   ->   Now I thought there was only one kernel-source RPM for all kernels,
->   ->   and I certainly have not been able to find more than one kernel-source
->   ->   RPM on the distro CDs and on the Internet.

->   ->   Can you please tell me if my assumption about there being only
->   ->   one kernel-source RPM for all kernels, e.g. UP and SMP, is correct,
->   ->   and if it is then why I receive the above error and how I may avoid
->   ->   it.

->   Hello, Matthew.
->
->   Thank you for contacting Intel technical support.  There are as many kernel
->   sources as there are kernel builds - it is a one-to-one relationship.
->
->   To avoid the error, you must in fact get the kernel source for your running
->   kernel, i.e. 2.4.18-3smp.
