Where DNS fits in, as that DNS is used instead of an explicite WINS setting for AD aware machines to find things like domain servers, etc.

What you need to do is set up your DNS to contain various DNS names within your domain, pointing at the various services on your domain. Info on how to do this is in the Samba HOWTO v3.0, from www.samba.org - look for info about AD and DNS.

You need not install Samba to do any of this - the Samba docs do explain a lot of the M$ specific setup stuff in a non-"just click-click-click and it magically works" way, and is very useful if you want to know what's really going on.
