You need to add MX record in DNS and define two MX hosts. First one will be primary and second one will be secondary. When first mail server goes down then your mail will be route to seconday mail server. But user will not be able to check mails.
second thing your dns and sendmail both are on same machine this might cause problem as your dns have to be on separate machine.
