Check out /var/log/messages

try tailing it

If you can remember what you did before it crashed, try to re-create and 
follow the messages file (tail -f /var/log/messages)  if it really crashes 
and you can't get to teh console running messages you can pipe to a file

tail -f /var/log/messages > followmessages
