The most recent glibc release for Red Hat Linux 7.3 is 2.2.5-44.
Where have you got your mysterious 2.2.4-78 from?

Btw, make sure, you do get the i586, i686 or athlon package when your CPU
belongs to one of that families (e.g. Intel Pentium or above, AMD
Athlon/Duron). The i386 glibc is for older CPUs, e.g. 80486,...

Which is because with Red Hat Linux, glibc is split into two packages. And
you would need to get a newer glibc-common package, too.


Can't comment on your other pretty confusing plans, since it doesn't
become clear whether you know the implications of replacing a glibc.
