"error loading floppy" module in kernel 2.6.1-1.138

Hello,

I'm trying to install RH9 on a Dell Latitude D600 laptop, and in order to take advantage of power management features, wireless chipset, etc., I've played around with the 2.6.x kernels a bit. However, I'm having 2 device-related troubles that are bugging the hell out of me -- the laptop doesn't have a floppy disk drive (but errors regarding the 'floppy' module appear in the bootstream), but does have a CD-RW/DVD drive (which isn't working). I'm wondering if anyone has seen this or has any advice? So far, I've done the following:

(1) install rh9 from CDs as usual (giving kernel 2.4.20-8)

(2) install the new kernel 2.6.1-1.138 source RPM from http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.5/RPMS.kernel/, as well as several packages which are required for 2.6.x kernels (initscripts-7.28-1.i386.rpm, modutils-2.4.25-10.i386.rpm, etc.)

(3) clean-up any crap in the build directory (/usr/src/linux-2.6.1-1.138/, "make clean", "make mrproper"), make minor modifications to the .config via "make xconfig", then build the kernel ("make modules modules_install") and install its image in /boot/, config grub, ("make install") etc....

Then, when the PC reboots into the new kernel (2.6.1-1.138custom), I see the following error repeated 3x immediately after the "Checking for new hardware" line in the bootstream:
modprobe: WARNING: Error inserting floppy (/lib/modules/2.6.1-1.138custom/kernel/drivers/block/floppy.ko): No such device

This isn't too surprising because the laptop doesn't have a floppy drive. However, when I comment-out the line "alias block-major-2 floppy" in /etc/modprobe.conf.dist, I still see this boot-up error. Also, I made sure to specify the CONFIG_BLK_DEV_FD parameter from the kernel build .config file as a module ('m') and not to be compiled into the kernel. So, I think I'm missing something??

Two things to note are (1) this problem also seems to happen if I install straight from the kernel source (from kernel.org) rather than via the source RPM and (2) this is my first venture into the kernel, so if I'm fundamentally wrong about anything please let me know!

Thanks for any help,
   Cameron

PS. In case anyone's seen this -- the laptop's CD/DVD drive also doesn't seem to be recognized by the 2.6.1 kernel (either my own build or the untouched kernel-2.6.1-1.138 RPM), but I'll either figure that out myself or wait for another email...
