Just a slim chance that you're seeing the same problem I ran into. I was getting the same error message and fought with it for weeks before finding a solution.
For me, it turned out to be the NIC driver. My system has a Broadcom BCM5702X, for which the RedHat 9 install selected the tg3 driver. I downloaded the latest linux driver for the NIC from the Broadcom site and it solved the problem. HTH.
