FWIW... looking for something similar, I attached a nokia cellphone to the serial port of my RH 9 server, and using the commspi from Java and classes put together by Philippe Bertramo http://www.waex.com/techinfo/sms.htm, I use it in an increasing number of servlets on tomcat.
Otherwise I've been advised to take a look at http://www.kannel.org
