Hi Jim,
What u can do is boot into Single user mode and then edit the file /etc/passwd and delete the password entry for root.Next time u boot u box and enter root as username it wont promt for the password, u can anyways update ur password. Also what u can do is get Knoppix Linux's cd and boot ur box with it and and then mount ur Redhat HDD and delete the Password entry correponding to root in /etc/passwd or /etc/shodow file.
anyways do let me if it worked out I have tried it once i did work for me.
