rsync and incremental file changes

Hi all,

I have a detail question on rsync. If you don't use --whole-file
how does rsync copy a file especially a binary or a large mail
box?

For our hot-standby systems internally we use --wholefile
on a private 100Mbit switch and I must say the data flies.

I've implemented an off-site backup location over a T1
and I'm looking at ways to speed up the backup process.
Especially with big mail boxes sending incremental information
could be a big win.

I've googled for some insight on this but didn't see any definitive
answer.

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Mike
