php installation, a note to novice linux users,

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Basically anything you want to install, php, httpd, or gcc compiler, first
check to see if it's already installed.

Do rpm -q (package name), i.e. rpm -q gcc or rpm -q php or rpm -q httpd; note
don't type the exact package name,e.g. php-4.2.2-17.2.i386.rpm, but just as
I typed.

You'll save yourself a lot of time and confusion doing this first. The
documentation on Redhat web site may not reflect that a lot of things are
installed automatically. Also, they may not be correct for the latest version
of some of the software. For example, in case of apache and php I found only
one document (under /usr/share/doc/httpd-2.0.40/migration.html) that has
updated and accurate information for the current versions of php and apache.

have fun!
