Hi,
What trouble are you having with CUPS? CUPS is the newer default (?) printing
system. The web interface makes management easier and it does a few tricks
like digital cert support. For home or small environment use either should
work fine and LPRng is tried and true. If your having problems with CUPS
there is no reason not to try LPRng. I just have a single networked printer
and it works fine with either.

You may want to look at the man on 'alternatives' for how the switch between
printing systems works, commands like 'lpr' get sym linked to whichever
system is active.
