X problem

I have no clue what happened. I updated (via up2date) glibc stuff.
Ive been having some odd delay problems with the network connection
lately, specifically apache (all I run is apache, DNS and sshd
right now), so I rebooted my machine and the X display wont come up.

It asks me to try and fix it via root password, so I do that and it
goes off into never-never land (black screen) and never returns.

Any ideas?

I tried running redhat-config-xfree86 --reconfig
but I get the following:

* ddcprobe returned bogus values:
ID: None
Name: None
HorizSync: None
VertSync: None

Trying with card: S3 Trio64 (generic)
Xlib: extension "RENDER" missing on display "localhost:10.0".

Im doing this over an xhost connection onto another machine of mine,
I get a display showing me my resolution and color depths, I say OK
then it says you must restart your server...so I reboot but same
results.

Im using RH 9.0, Samsung Syncmaster 4NE with a S3 Trio card (old).

Secondly, not sure if this is related, but I run the command:

find / \( -nouser -o -nogroup \) -print

to see if any files are not owned by someone. I keep seeing
files that have no owner or no group ownership, just numbers
that dont exist in /etc/passwd or /etc/group

Im running a tight IPTables on my machine with 2.4.22 kernel

Any help is much appreciated!

Jeff
