Some have eluded to these but here goes.
Is Samba running on the Linux box? It needs to be.
Make sure Samba is using encrypted passwords. By default NT/2K/XP send 
encrypted passwords first. You can set them to use clear text, but it's a 
simple config in Samba so set encrypted to yes.
You don't have to set Samba to be a PDC, but it might be good to.
Another thing, you have to create a machine account on the Samba side for 
XP/NT/2K boxes.
