I'm not sure on that, but Mandrake is based on Red Hat. They should offer 
something you can just compile on your system (or a srpm). 

What model of laptop and do you know what the modem is? You could try either 
minicom (command line) or kdial (KDE front end) to see if they can auto 
detect it, but I don't have a laptop so I'm not sure what options there are. 
Maybe someone will have had some luck with a similar laptop.
