Thanks a lot!!!! This was indeed the main cause. Moving on ...
I checked with /sbin/mii-tool -v the status of the network speed, it says it's 100Mbps Full Duplex, although the hub's leds says otherwise (Half) and I get a lot of collisions when transferring data.
