Matt, 

I saw a previous post for NUT (http://www.exploits.org/nut), but I wasn't
sure it provided the same "documented" (as in the notes in /etc/inittab)
functionality as PowerD.  

Also, I'm in a mixed environment (Win32 and *nix), and the Smart-UPS my RH 8
box is connected has its "smart" port monitored by a NT4 server.  

I guess I'll look into NUT some more...

I think that is vestigal and can be mostly ignored.

There is a utility called 'nut' that shippes in later releases of Red Hat
Linux that
can provide similar functionality to powerd. Have a look at that before
trying to
get powerd working.
