kdeinit memory usage on RH 9

This can't be normal! I have only one command window open and top running. All my RH 9 machines are doing this. What are all these "kdeinit" processes running and why does each one eat 12+ megs of RAM? I have 512MB RAM on this system and it's all eaten up by kdeinit? There has to be something wrong here. I thought Linux was supposed to be a low memory footprint so older machines would run well. I should NEVER take more than a kew hundred kbytes to support a shell window shouldn't it? Is anyone else having this problem? "top" output shown below from one machine:
