Tape Usage

Hai friends,
I have a linux box with RH9 installed.
I am facing I/O problem with my tape.

Tape specification is
Host:scsi Channel 00 id:03 Lun: 00
Vendor:Tandberg Model: slr6 Rev:0404
Type:Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision:02

device file is /dev/st0

i can eject and inquire the status of tape using the
command mt -f /dev/st0 status|eject
but when i use 
mt -f /dev/st0 tell then i am getting I/O error.


also..

i cannot use the tape with the tar utility..

i am getting I/O error when i use tar -tvf /dev/st0

the tape which i am using was previously used with SCO
unixware. now we want to migrate from the SCO unix to
linux and all the data are stored in tape

Also i want to use the foxplus package in linux..
i have the binary foxplus package but i am facing
problem like 
"unable to execute binary file" what is the paroblem
