You've not done the next simple test. Create a new user, and login as that new user. What happens? (This test lets you localize the problem. Is it a root versus user problem, or does the problem only reside with one user?)



The user probably has something strange in their config files in their home directory. You may also find ~/.xsession-errors useful.
