I assume he is using HW RAID. In which case, Linux wouldn't "see" the physical drives per se'. It sounds like something went wrong before all this happened (ie ls not working etc). I'd wait the 6hrs as you have little choice. Once you get a good volume, you can move on. It sound ugly, though.
