I've never tried dump/restore before ever since I read this post by Linus
Torvalds, http://lwn.net/2001/0503/a/lt-dump.php3.  Try find and cpio to
copy the drive in single user mode...

find /old/drive -xdev | cpio -pmduv /new/drive
