All of the files firestarter uses are stored in /etc/firestarter. The
main firewall scipt is /etc/firestarter/firewall.sh. Firestarter comes
with a good configuration wizard, and you can also tweak anything you
might need - like opening and closing ports - on the fly. I have the
applet set to start when I log into gnome. I can see all the port scans
bounce off in real time.

I'm sure other firewall configurators are as powerful etc., but this one
is so easy to use I can't imagine switching to anything else.
