NIS Freebsd Redhat 9

I'm trying to set up nis with a freebsd box as the server and redhat 9
as the client. I cannot get it to authenticate to the freebsd server. I
have been reading and It looks like I need to set up a shadow NIS map
for Linux. I found a patch here
http://www.mail-archive.com/freebsd-net@xxxxxxxxxxx/msg09367.html

but everytime I run it awk complains soon after it gets to the
shadow.byname part. It says file not found. I was wondering if anyone
has gotten this to ever work and I would appreciate any help.

Thanks
