hardware problems: raid controller and external storage

We've got this honkin' big box. It's got a MegaRAID SAS 2108 [Liberator]
in it. The OEM, for some idiot reason, put two 500G 2.5" drives (!) into
it, and they're set up RAID 1. That's fine, but there's an open SAS slot.
We bought a 12-drive RAID box, and plugged it in....

The Megaraid, via both gui & cmd line, sees one of two things: either a
40tibibyte drive (which would be correct, it was already RAID 6)... but
will *not* let it be a passthrough, but insists on RAID 0. Otherwise, I
change the box to jbod, and now the stupid RAID cards sees only *one* 4TB
trive, without seeing the rest.

Anyone have any ideas that don't involve us going out and buying another
card?
