Could not skip the device-mapper; because lvm2 depended on it. So had to use "yum -x device-mapper --skip-broken update" to successfully upgrade remaining packages from the channel and also install the latest kernel. # yum -x device-mapper update . . . lvm2-2.02.84-6.el5.x86_64 from rhel-5.6_x86_64 has depsolving problems --> Missing Dependency: device-mapper >= 1.02.63-2 is needed by package lvm2-2.02.84-6.el5.x86_64 (rhel-5.6_x86_64) Error: Missing Dependency: device-mapper >= 1.02.63-2 is needed by package lvm2-2.02.84-6.el5.x86_64 (rhel-5.6_x86_64) You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem You could try running: package-cleanup --problems package-cleanup --dupes rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest The program package-cleanup is found in the yum-utils package.
