Ahah! I knew I wasn't crazy (most of the time). It seems the 4.15.9 has helped
with the issue, I have had no more lockups (but I sure had a lot of cleanup to
do when the 8-core box crashed between kernel install and intrd regeneration
(as well as the other 59 packages worth of post-install triggers that were missed)

Thank you for pointing out the bugs that my kernel search-foo was not strong
enough to find.
