until now I was very fond of WD caviar green drives, but after this
50% failure rate I'm not very eager to restore data from the backup.

what is your experience with 3TB drives, WD and others?

If you REALLY care about the data, go for enterprise drives, or at
least stay away from green / eco drives.

I'm about to trial some WD Red 3TB drives, which are theoretically quasi-enterprise, slow-spinning, low-power for 24x7 use in NAS RAID applications and have usable short-timeout SCT/ERC setting.

I'll let you know how I get on with them.

Cheers,

John.
