cluster maintenance for dummies

To Whom it May Concern:

Recently set up a beowulf cluster(linux) with a study group. I've been charged with writing a (maintenance) script-- where if something major goes wrong(power loss to one of the nodes, disk is full), all administrators get an email. It seems easy enough to do, but searching for an example has come up dry. I learn well by example--specifically because I've never done anything like this before.

Is a script like this even called a "maintenance" script?

Any suggestions?
