We've had excellent luck with the Adaptec 39160's for our Linux RAID system. We're running a 52-disk software RAID10 array with (4) 39160's and have had no issue (knock wood) in the 6 months that it has been in production. I cannot comment on non-SCSI controllers as I have not used any with Linux RAID.
