That makes sense, I recall reading posts about this problem being
especially noticable when using Adaptec RAID controllers.

Do you mind posting a note here whne you've found the answers. It's been
my experience that firmware upgrades (for disks) usually involve sending
the drive back to the manufacturer. If you come up with something else I'd
like to know.
