pulseaudio equalizer

I guess the equalizer must be third party software not developed by pulseaudio. As is on a clean stretch install with pulseaudio working, pulseaudio equalizer fails.

I install
root$ apt install  pulseaudio-equalizer

After which i execute from a user terminal
user$ qpaeq
johhnycrash@Tango:~$ qpaeq
Which gives error:
There was an error connecting to pulseaudio, please make sure you have the pulseaudio dbus module loaded, exiting...

Ok fair I do what it requires.
$ pactl load-module module-dbus-protocol
25

I then execute
user$ qpaeq

Then it throws a popup with error message

pa_stream_writable_size() failed: Connection terminated

and a terminal error:
It seems that running pulseaudio does not support equalizer features and loading module-equalizer-sink module failed.
Exiting...

Whats up with this ?

The Equalizer is included in Debian stretch, but it seems severely broken.

It would be nice to have the equalizer working with pulseaudio as there is a boatload of applications for that.
