I figured out the problem (but not its root cause): after an idle/running cycle, the smoother got stuck and returned always the same value. I didn't figure out why. But resetting it before resuming it fixed the problem :) So here's the last iteration of the patch, which I now consider to work well and would like to submit for inclusion (after addressing the team's remarks of course).
