If you don't care about the hardware device at all, you can just use PA without an ALSA device by commenting out the appropriate modules in /etc/pulse/default.pa We have a module-null-sink which provides a virtual playback device and every sink has a virtual monitor source that lets you capture all audio going to that sink. -- Arun
