You could try to set LDFLAGS="${LDFLAGS} -L/usr/local/lib" or you could set LD_LIBRARY_PATH="${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}:/usr/local/lib" You could also take the "safe route" by installing it in /usr instead of /usr/local -- which won't overwrite anything since you removed your old libtool anyway.
