Perhaps alsactl init 0 will help? 10.04 LTS and earlier use a crufty distro-maintained version. 10.10 and newer will use the init db (though we still have to figure out how to differentiate the massively poor '{Audigy,SB Live} Analog/Digital Output' mess, among others). alsactl init is most definitely the way to go.
