pactl to set default soundcard?

Yeah, although you don't need to echo it in, it will accept command line
arguments.

It would be nice if someone unified some of the output of pactl and
pacmd as well as the commands they accept.

I'm not really sure why pacmd exists at all to be honest... (other than
it's likely easier to work with and add new features to as you don't
have to go via the protocol).
