What resampler are you using? The default resampler is better quality
than the alsa one but the tradeoff is more CPU. Try chancing it to
"trivial" and see if that helps.

Make sure that you have enabled timer based scheduling and that the main
audio clients are properly dictating their audio buffer requirements to
PA. Most clients are not yet able to do this properly. GST can if the
correct params are given, but other clients are not yet that clever
(e.g. Phonon is not yet able to do this).
